In Überseestadt, tradition meets modernity. Embark on an exciting journey through the history of Bremen's port and marvel at a completely new quarter where people live, work and enjoy life today. Where high-rise office buildings, apartments and restaurants are located today, harbor life once pulsated. Back then, probably no one would have expected that one day one of the largest urban planning projects in Europe would develop here.

A new port for Bremen

After much toing and froing, Bremen decided at the end of the 19th century to bring the port back to the city. With Bremerhaven, a direct sea access had been created a few decades earlier, but the city wanted to remain competitive. After the great Weser correction under Ludwig Franzius had taken place, there was again free navigation on the Weser for ships with a draft of up to five meters. In 1888, the first harbor basin was inaugurated: the "port of Europe" - at that time still called "free port I". Over the next few years, other port basins followed, including Bremen's overseas port.

A tin box changed everything

In 1966, the first container ship from America docked in Bremen. The tin boxes, which seemed somewhat alien at the time, revolutionized the transport of goods quite quickly and Bremen's main port was moved back to Bremerhaven. Fewer and fewer ships came to the Bremen ports. At the end of the 1990s, the "port of overseas", one of the basins, was even completely filled in. The "Überseestadt Master Plan" followed, and since then a new world has been emerging on some 300 hectares. Where the container giants once lay at anchor in the "port of overseas", there are now the central market and residential buildings, among other things. Only a small pond reminds us that there used to be a huge harbor basin here. Until the 1990s, general cargo was still stored in "Schuppen Eins". Today, it is home to a center for mobility and automotive culture, among other things. In addition, many new buildings have been erected. No other district in Bremen has seen as much change in recent years as this one.
Embark on an exciting journey through a historic port area that has changed completely in recent years and discover one or two hidden treasures of the city.
