Guided city tour for school classes in Bremen – on a discovery tour through the Old town

Are you planning a school trip to Bremen or looking for an exciting addition to your lessons? Then this guided tour through Bremen's historic Old town is just right for you! Whether you're teaching elementary, middle, or high school students, this child- and youth-friendly, educational tour is specially tailored to school classes and brings your students closer to the history, culture and legends of the Hanseatic city in an entertaining way.

Explore Bremen – age-appropriately, interactive and exciting

Together with your school class, you will embark on an exciting journey through Bremen's beautiful Old town. The tour is designed to be individually tailored to each grade level in terms of language, content, and teaching style. The focus is on experiencing, understanding and participating.

Whether as part of a school trip or as an extracurricular learning opportunity, this city tour brings history to life and will be remembered for a long time to come.

The market square – authority, market and a strange stone

Your discovery tour begins at the famous market square, often referred to as Bremen's “parlor,” and its surroundings. Here you will find magnificent buildings such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site town hall (from the outside) with the stone statue of Roland, the Schütting, and St. Peter's Cathedral. But what is the story behind the mysterious spitting stone? And why does Bremen's Roland have particularly pointed knees? We will tell you this and much more during the tour. Learn how the Bremen councilors made a political statement against the powerful archbishop with the location of the town hall and immerse yourself in stories of commercial power, urban development, and mysterious symbols.

The Bremen Town Musicians – landmarks with fairy-tale charm

Of course, no tour of Bremen for children and young people would be complete without the world-famous Bremen Town Musicians! The four animals from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale never actually made it to Bremen – and yet today they are the city's most famous ambassadors. At this stop, you will learn why the donkey, the dog, the cat and the cock still attract so many tourists today – and what their story tells us about courage, friendship and new beginnings.

The Böttcherstrasse – a street like a work of art

The unique Böttcherstrasse is a real architectural and cultural highlight of the city. Here, where barrels and casks used to be made, you will now find an artistically designed brick street that surprises visitors with numerous sculptures, reliefs and details. What is the legend of the Seven Lazy Brothers all about? Why is there a stone hen with chicks sitting on a ledge? And what connects Böttcherstrasse with the well-known cocoa powder KABA? These and other surprising stories await you here.

The Schnoor – like a walk through the Middle Ages

Finally, the city tour takes you to the enchanting Schnoor, Bremen's oldest quarter. The narrow, winding alleys with their tiny houses are almost reminiscent of a film set.

But behind the fairytale facade lie many interesting stories: How did people live here in the past? Who was Heini Holtenbeen and what did he always hide in his coat pocket? And why did people once walk through the streets wearing long beak masks? You will find the answers to these and many other exciting questions during the tour. The Balge, a long-vanished tributary of the Weser, also plays a role—and we reveal the secret of why this tributary led to the first toilet fee in Bremen and later disappeared.

Interactive elements and quiz for the grades 3 bis 7

To ensure that your students don't just listen, but actively participate, the city tour is designed to be interactive in many places – with questions or small search tasks (depending on the age group). This helps them to remember what they have experienced better.

For grades 3 to 7, there is a fun 20-minute quiz at the end of the tour with multiple-choice questions and normal questions about what they have seen and heard. This little knowledge game is not for assessment, but for playful repetition of what has been learned – with lots of fun and “aha” moments. The children can do the quiz either alone, in pairs, or in small groups. We then go through the answers together as a large group.
