The Bremen drop tower
How does it work and what happens inside it?
The drop tower in Bremen is a unique scientific laboratory that belongs to ZARM (Center for Applied Space Technology and Microgravity) – a real attraction for anyone interested in technology and space travel! But what exactly happens in this 146-meter-high tower, which can be seen from far away above the Bremen Technology Park?
In an exciting presentation in German language on site, you will learn in easy-to-understand language how the drop tower works and why it is so important for research in microgravity. You will learn how experiments are conducted under microgravity, that means in an environment where there is virtually no gravity.
Using small, interactive hands-on experiments, you can even try out for yourself what happens when gravity suddenly “disappears.” It's an ideal way to understand this complex topic in a clear and playful way!
Behind the scenes: ZARM integration and deceleration chamber
If conditions allow (ongoing operations always take priority), you will then be taken directly to areas that are normally not open to the public. You will visit the ZARM integration hall, where experiments for the drop tower are prepared. You will also be able to visit the impressive deceleration chamber, where experiments are safely caught after free fall.
Another highlight: a prototype of a moon and Mars station can also be admired (from the outside) – a glimpse into the future of space travel, right before your eyes!
Once a month, there is a public tour that you can take part in as an individual or with your small group. Registration is only possible directly through ZARM with Mr. Mikka Pilath. The dates and Mr. Pilath's contact details for registration can be found here:
https://www.zarm.uni-bremen.de/de/besuch/fuehrungen.html
Would you like to arrange a private tour with your group at another time? No problem, individual tours can also be requested directly from Mr. Pilath.
