Guided city tour through Bremen-Vegesack – Discover the maritime North of the Hanseatic city

Vegesack is one of Bremen's most historic and maritime districts – a place where you can experience the history of German shipbuilding, seafaring and the Hanseatic merchant tradition in an impressive way. On our exciting guided tour through Bremen-Vegesack, you will follow in the footsteps of shipyard founders, Greenland sailors and wealthy Bremen citizens who built their summer residences here in the 19th century.

The Vegesack harbor

One of Germany's first artificially constructed river ports was built in Vegesack at the beginning of the 17th century. This historic port laid the foundation for the maritime importance of the town and its surroundings, which at that time did not yet belong to Bremen. Even today, the proximity to the Weser River and seafaring can be felt here at every turn.

Today, the port is home to the "Vegesacker Museumshaven" (Vegesack museum port), where historic ships from different eras are moored. Among others, the sailing lugger BV2 VEGESACK, the experimental cruiser BREMEN and the FRANZIUS, a faithful replica of a Weser barge, are at home here. Please note: there is no guarantee that all of these ships will be in the port at the time of the tour.

The Old Warehouse – a testament to shipyard culture

Another landmark is the Old Warehouse, which was built around 1814 by shipyard founder Johann Lange. Today, the historic building houses various institutions and companies.

Stadtführung Vegesack Utkiek

The Utkiek – memories of the whaling era

At the popular Utkiek viewpoint, you will discover an impressive bronze cast of a whale jawbone – a reminder of the Greenland sailors who set out from Vegesack to hunt whales in former centuries. This era has shaped the district just as much as its shipyards.

Vegesack City Garden – Botanical diversity and historical roots

Recreation and history come together in the beautiful Vegesack City Garden, which dates back to the physician and botanist Wilhelm Albrecht Roth. The spacious park with its partly exotic trees not only offers green oases of calm, but also insights into the history of Vegesack. A part of the city garden is visited during the guided tour.

Weserstrasse – captains' houses and merchants' villas

A stroll along part of Weserstrasse takes you past magnificent merchants' villas and stylish captains' houses. This is where wealthy Bremen merchants once resided, having discovered Vegesack as a summer retreat and built their prestigious homes directly on the high banks of the Weser river.

Exciting anecdotes and surprising stories

During the city tour, you will hear entertaining and surprising stories – for example, why the donkey from the Bremen Town Musicians is said to have spent his retirement in Vegesack of all places. We will also shed light on what supplies sailors took with them on their months-long voyages and why it was here in Vegesack that the idea of founding the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) was born.
