In a presentation, we will show you photos and video sequences and tell you entertaining, informative stories – just as if you were there yourself.
Experience Vegesack's highlights on screen
In an exciting and entertaining presentation, we take you on a digital stroll along the highlights of Vegesack – the "Museumshaven" (Museum harbor), the idyllic "Stadtgarten" (park), the historic Weserstrasse, the famous Utkiek viewpoint and the traditional "Alter Speicher" (old warehouse).
You will see photos and video sequences, hear fascinating stories about the past and present of the district – and learn some curious facts that may surprise even long-established Bremen residents. For example, did you know why the donkey from the fairy tale of the Bremen Town Musicians is said to have found refuge in Vegesack of all places?
Vegesack - a district with maritime history
Vegesack is a place with soul – shaped by shipbuilding and its proximity to the Weser river. One of Germany's first artificially constructed river ports was built here in the early 17th century. Over time, Vegesack developed into a popular retreat for wealthy Bremen merchants, who had magnificent villas built on the high banks of the Weser.
On the digital city tour, you will learn more about:
- the impressive history of the Old Warehouse, built around 1814 by shipyard founder Johann Lange
- the ships in the "Museumshaven", including the experimental cruiser BREMEN
- the Utkiek, where an imposing bronze cast of a whale's jawbone commemorates the era of whaling
- the "Stadtgarten", once laid out by the physician and botanist Wilhelm Albrecht Roth
- the elegant captains' houses and merchants' villas in Weserstrasse
We will also take a look at the lives of sailors in times gone by – from their provisions on board to the founding of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service, which has its roots in Vegesack.
We will take you on a lively journey through Bremen's history – with plenty of humor, in-depth knowledge and little anecdotes that you won't soon forget.
The virtual tour of Vegesack takes place in cooperation with the museum of local history Schloss Schönebeck, which has provided us with historical photos from its digital archive for the presentation.
